Useful Tips for Playing Poker

When you’re playing poker online, there are a handful of things you can do that will make your playing experience more enjoyable and more profitable. A lot of these ideas aren’t taught in poker books, and can only come from experienced gamblers who have seen it all. Keep these poker tips in mind, and you’ll be well on your way to doing better in the games.

The first thing is to keep very good records. Whether you use a pen and paper to keep up with your account balance each day, or you use a spreadsheet program, it’s absolutely critical that you keep good records. If you don’t keep good records, a number of bad things can happen to you. First, if someone hacks into your computer and gets access to your poker account, you can lose money and never know about it. Second, if for some reason there are computer problems for the poker site and you can’t log in, you’ll know exactly how much money is supposed to be in your account.

The second tip to keep in mind is to use your records to decide if you’re a winning or losing player in certain games. If you play a certain level and consistently win for months at a time, then you might consider moving up a level to play against more challenging players. This will allow you to improve your game and eventually make more money than you were making before. If you consistently lose, then it’s probably time to move down to the next lowest stake and try to regain your losses there against easier competition. Remember that a smart poker player wants to seek out players that are only slightly worse than he is so that he can continue to learn while still making money.

This third tip is something that a lot of people don’t really take to heart, but the few that do reap huge benefits. You should learn to play a variety of games so that there is always a good game available to you. This also allows you to play mixed games, where you’ll be pitted against a lot of players who only know one or two of the games, while you could know a majority of the games in a rotation that includes as few as three games, and as many as ten. As an added benefit, as newer games become more fashionable and older games aren’t being played as much, you’ll be ahead of the curve and be able to take advantage of people moving to a new game.
